We have a small, happy, and healthy flock of girls here at the ranch. We brought in a few different breeds, to ensure adequate production, size and quality. Some of the breeds we have laying are:

• Buff Orpington- Tan eggs
• Rhode Island Red- Brown eggs
• White Leghorn-White eggs
• Barred Rock- Brown eggs
• Ameraucana- Blue eggs
• Olive egger- Green eggs
• Silkie (for fun)- Creme eggs

Our girls have a clean coop and run, filled with sand footing. We opted for the sand in the coop and run for various reasons:

• Sand provides additional grit to the diet, to help prevent crop blockages and infection
• Sand does not retain moisture, or become muddy. Water, urine, etc. soaks in and dries quickly. Feces sits on top of the sand, making coop clean up quick and easy- Like cleaning a giant kitty litter box. 
• With cleaning weekly, sand bedding contains less bacteria, which means hens are less likely to be exposed to several pathogens, as well as lower risk for parasites.
• Hens LOVE to dust bathe. Dust baths are so important for hens. They use the dirt to clean their feathers, and it also helps to exfoliate their skin, and prevents issues such as ticks, fleas and mites.

To spoil the girls even more, the get to free range. We set up our coop and run, next to our yard, and created them their own entry way to run and play. their run and our yard is fenced in with heavy gauge welded wire. they are capable of flying out to roam the property, but they always know they have a safe place to roam, where other animals and predators can't get in. they self-trained to come out first think in the morning, and then they make their way back home to roost when they decide its bedtime.
